Egg Vegetarian or Non Vegetarian
Our society comprises of vegetarians, non-vegetarians and then eggetarians. But it is surprising to know the word eggetarian? Because, since ages, we are not able to put the eggs into veg category or the non-veg category. Few people consider that eggs are non-vegetarian since they come from a hen i.e. a living being. On the other hand, some people believe that they are vegetarian. So, let us know in depth about these eggs.
Finally, now scientists have given us the answer for this controversy. After studying in depth about this and doing their research, scientists have put end to this debate & said that eggs are ‘VEGETARIAN‘.
This is excellent news for vegetarians as now; they can add one more thing to their diet.
Vegetarian Eggs 1 Composition of Egg
Scientists explained that the egg consist of 3 parts i.e. egg shell, egg white and egg yolk. The yolk consists of fat, cholesterol and proteins while whites have only protein.
Scientists also said that the eggs that which are consumed by us daily aren’t fully developed and don’t have embryos. For this one is not eating bird/animal as these eggs don’t have embryos and are unfertilized.
Vegetarian Eggs 2 Unfertilized eggs
The eggs are called unfertilized when the hen lays eggs without mating. Scientists said that the eggs available in grocery stores and markets are unfertilized. People are mainly worried about chickens but one can heave a sigh of relief, as the eggs laid without a rooster (Male) are unfertilized.
When the chicken is 6 months old, it lays eggs every one and a half day. If a cock is present around, it might lead to chicks i.e. fertilized ones. However, without cock, the eggs are unfertilized, which means there are no chicks.
Vegetarian Eggs 3 Organic Eggs
First of all, an egg is popularly considered to be a non-vegetarian food. However, there are several facts that support the contrary. If we look at it, in terms of definition, it basically is that those who eat flesh are non-vegetarians while those who consume egg are indeed vegetarian as the egg has no flesh or life.
In India, it is usually considered to be meat and most vegetarians do not eat them. In fact when the eggs are not containing flesh in it, so, no question of calling it as non vegetarian.
Vegetarian Eggs 4 People’s Choice
A lot of people still have their belief that eggs are non-veg, and may get upset at first but technically eggs don’t fall under the definition of being a non-vegetarian product. Similarly, like milk is considered to be vegetarian even though it comes from cows, likewise it is not necessary that any product that comes from animals is non-vegetarian. Likewise then milk is also non vegetarian. But we consume milk happily with no controversy in mind.
Vegetarian Eggs 5 Regular eggs
These eggs are the product of “commercially farmed” chickens, most likely raised in battery cages (small cages stacked on top of each other), where the bird has clipped wings and beaks to prevent harm and cannibalism. They are held in reserve in dark covered spaces and have no exposure to sunlight or exercise.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture had given a “grading system” to rate the quality of eggs.
- Grade AA – They have thick, firm whites, yolks are high and round, and are best for frying or poaching (most common)
- Grade A – These are similar to AA eggs, except for the whites are slightly less firm (most common)
- Grade B – They have thinner whites and a flatter yolk, and are commonly used for liquid, frozen, dry egg products, or scrambles
Vegetarian Eggs 6 Cage Free
Cage Free are those when the chickens are not raised in battery cages, however, they still most likely are raised in tight conditions, in a dark, barn-like setting, with clipped beaks and wings, and with no exposure to sunlight. “Cage Free” appears to be that they roam freely but it is not so.
Vegetarian Eggs 7 Certified Organic
Certified Organic Eggs are the kind in which the feed that is given to the chickens is organic, and the chickens are not pumped with antibiotics – which reduce one with the exposure to pesticides. These chickens most likely have very little exposure to sunlight.
Vegetarian Eggs 8 Organic Vegetarian Fed
Organic Vegetarian Fed means when the hens are fed on organic vegetarian-based diet but also eat bugs and worms.
Vegetarian Eggs 9 Omega-3 Enriched
Omega-3 Enriched eggs means, the feed given to the chickens are enriched with an omega-3 diet, usually in the form of flaxseed. It is a fairly new arrival in the market. Looking to the importance of omega 3, farmers saw an opportunity to enrich their chickens with these healthy fats in their diet.
Vegetarian Eggs 10 Pasture Raised
Pasture Raised eggs are those in which the chickens are free to wander on open grassland, eat an organic diet, enjoy bugs and worms, see daylight. They are not given hormones or antibiotics. These eggs have darker/richer yolks, have been known to taste better, and have better nutritional profiles (in vitamins A, E, betacarotine, Omega-3’s, etc.). This makes a sense that they’d be healthier animals and produce a healthier egg because of their natural living.
