Latest Entertainment in Hollywood Updates
Scarlett Johansson being one of the biggest movie stars on this planet has revealed that Black Widow movie will be the one which would show Natasha, the way one never might have seen before, and that’s been long overdue.
Marvel’s Black Widow has been in the MCU (Marvel cinematic Universe) for 10 years, but in those 10 years, not once has she gotten her own solo film… that is until now. With the movie just under two months away, Scarlett Johansson revealed more about what to expect from the movie to Entertainment Weekly. And based on what she had to say, this movie is definitely going to be our closest, most intimate look at Natasha Romanoff yet.
In most films, we’ve seen a Natasha who often plays second fiddle to the lead character. Sometimes it’s Iron Man, sometimes its Captain America. Other times, she’s just sharing screen time with the dozens of other characters who make up the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And while we’ve seen bits and pieces of her character grow over time, from a clean, reformed Russian spy to a morale-stricken, empathetic hero, the spotlight hasn’t always been shed on the inner workings of Natasha’s character.
Marvel Movies, Avengers
This time around, though, the film promises to explore who Natasha really is in the timeline between Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War. Johansson said to EW in the interview. She thought it was interesting to explore this part of her life before she rejoins the Avengers and before she makes out that how the ultimate sacrifice would lead her to become the full person from all the broken pieces.
Adding to that, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige said in the interview: “A story proceeding from the previous work would simply let one know the things which had left the gaps like- How does she get her Widow stingers for the first time? How did she learn to do a flip? That doesn’t matter.” As Entertainment Weekly points out, the part that ends up mattering is how Natasha’s found-family “helped shape her sense of self.”
In the trailers, we’ve seen that Natasha is joined by some old friends, Yelena, Elina and Alexei, who all welcome her back with open arms. Of course, we never got to see this side of Natasha’s life before, and the interview mentions that this movie is 100 percent all about family. (As David Harbour put it in the interview, it’s a “character study of a dysfunctional family.”)
Unfortunately, going back home for Natasha will put her in the face of danger as she goes up against new villain Taskmaster. And she’ll be forced to re-live her past, as he’s the one currently controlling the Black Widow program. It’ll be an adventure to open up old wounds for Natasha. But in that, we’ll likely get more, real depth to her character than ever before. (Because let’s be honest, the Hulk/Natasha fling in Age of Ultron was nothing short of a disaster for both her and Bruce’s character development.)
All this to say, while Marvel is welcoming new additions to the MCU family, it also looks like they’re balancing that with going deeper on characters we haven’t spent much time with.
The first round of Disney+ shows is a great example of this. Characters like the Falcon and Bucky are beloved by fans, but they never quite got the amount of screen time necessary to make them completely rounded-out characters. (Though Marvel certainly did what they could in the time provided.) Not everyone can get an extra shot in the spotlight on the big screen like Black Widow, but at least Marvel’s working it out so fans can get the most out of their favourite characters.
