In India, two professions are inseparable even though there is no link between them and they are Bollywood and Cricket. The sportsmen, who married the divas of the Indian Film Industry have taken this association to another level. The chapter does not end here, as we have many cricketers, who have appeared in Bollywood movies. While some of them have appeared as guests, many chose acting after saying goodbye to their sports career. There is also a long list of movies based on cricket, but we will discuss them in a future post. For today, we will name some famous cricketers who have acted in Bollywood Movies. Most of you would think the younger generation has started the trend, but it is not so. The association of Bollywood and cricket is older than your imaginations. It has its roots in the times of Salim Durrani as people had the same craze for cricketers and actors.
Cricketers who have acted in Bollywood Movies
1. Sachin Tendulkar
There is no better way to start the list than to discuss Sachin: The Billion Dollar. Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar made his acting debut in 2017 with a film that was based on his life events. The film allows some glimpse of his personal life and struggles he had faced in becoming the god of cricket in his 20 years career. The film was directed by James Erskine. It was basically a documentary and captured some unknown incidents of Sachin’s life.
2. Kapil Dev
Kapil Dev is widely known as the former Indian Cricket Team Captain, who made India proud after winning the Cricket World Cup in 1983. He has also made a guest appearance in Bollywood movies like Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, Iqbal and Stumped. The difference in Kapil Dev and other cricketers who have acted in movies is that he has only performed in films based on cricket and has played himself. He made a guest appearance in three films either as commentators or cricketers.
3. Yuvraj Singh
Everyone knows Yuvraj Singh as a spectacular allrounder, only a few are aware that he used to act in Punjabi films as a child actor. He has since then remained the favorite of photographers, who followed him everywhere to click his pictures. He used to work n films along with his father. One of the films where he acted as a child actor is ‘Mehndi Shagna Di’.
4. Yograj Singh:
Most of us know him as Yuvraj Singh’s father who keeps creating controversy blaming Dhoni for ruining his son’s career, but he is more than that. He is now a known actor, who started his career as a cricketer. His cricket career was not long, but he has worked in 340 movies so far. Youngsters acknowledged his acting skills when he played Milkha Singh’s coach in Farhan Akhtar’s Bhaag Milkha Bhaag.
5. Harbhajan Singh
Everybody is aware that Harbhajan has appeared in movies, but not most all are aware that he has made a special entry in some four movies including some Hindi and Punjabi movies. The movies, where he made a guest appearance are “Victory”, “Mujhse Shadi Karogi”, “Bhaji in Problem” and “Second Hand Husband.” It is also the film where he shared the screen with his wife Geeta Basra.
6. Bret Lee
The former Australian international cricketer recently appeared in the Indo-Australian movie named UnIndian. The film was directed by Anupam Sharma, and the chemistry between Bret Lee and Tanisha Chatterjee won all hearts. The film has been shot in Sydney, but the way it represented a combo of Indian and Australian culture is something to praise. Many people believed it was his debut, but he had already worked in a movie called Babe.
7. Sunil Gavaskar
Sunil Gavaskar is famous for his long sixes and straight drives which troubled the bowlers. The super talented cricketer has also impressed his fans in a different field called acting. He has acted in a Marathi movie named Savli Premachi. Apart from this, he also made a cameo in Naseeruddin Shah’s Malaamaal in 1988.
