It will be hard to believe that harmful food is only the culprit to make us unhealthy. To make food items attractive different Chemicals are used which increase the possibility of mouth ulcer, indigestion, throat pain, black patches on the body and asthma. It increases the possibility of liver cirrhosis and kidney problems too.
A global survey was conducted in the 12 countries with respect to vulnerability of packed foods and drinks and it was found that India ranked the lowest among 12 countries. The UK topped the charts, followed by the US and Australia.
The researchers had analyzed more than 400,000 food and drink products from 12 countries and territories around the world and its outcome had been published in the journal “Obesity Reviews”.
The survey was conducted on the parameters of high levels of sugar, saturated fat, salt and calories/kJ, the result revealed that in several of our favorite food items all the above parameters were very high.
The quality of packaged foods & drinks were measured and had given the star rating, for this rating Australia’s Health Star Rating system was followed. This rating system measures the levels of the nutrients such as energy, salt, sugar, saturated fat as well as protein, calcium and fibre and assigns a rating from half star to five stars. Half star is least healthy and 5 stars are the most healthy.
In this rating UK had the highest average Health Star Rating of 2.83, followed by the US at 2.82, Australia at 2.81, Chile 2.44, China with 2.43 and the lowest was of India with just 2.27 rating.
The researchers found an interesting fact that China’s drinks were among the healthiest amongst all the 12 countries with an average Health Star Rating of 2.9 and packaged foods scored low at just 2.39.
On the other hand South Africa scored low with its drinks at an average 1.92 rating while its foods came in at 2.87.
The UK scored best rating for sugar in the drinks at just 3.8 grams per 100 grams, with Canada being the second best at 4.6 grams per 100 grams.
This study was taken very seriously as diet-related diseases are spreading all around the globe to a greater extent, especially in many low- and middle-income countries (Packaged Food & Drinks).
The study lead author Elizabeth Dunford from the George Institute for Global Health expressed that the outcome of the study revealed that some countries are doing a much better job than others. Unfortunately, it’s the drawback of the nations that are least able to address the adverse health consequences that have the unhealthiest foods.
Billions of people are now becoming the target of unhealthy foods on a daily basis. The prime effect of this unhealthy food leads to obesity (Packaged Food & Drinks). And this Obesity opens the door to many harmful diseases and then the chain goes on which is never ending.

Monosodium glutamate- It is also known by name; Ajinomoto, Ascent and Vetsin. It damages the brain, it gives burning sensation, it gives rise to diseases like headache, chest ache, excessive sweating, allergy etc. It is used in fast food to make it tasty and also to make the stale food to look fresh.
Sodium benzoate– It disturbs the balance of sodium, potassium and Phosphorus in our body. It increases the blood pressure. Also used as a preservative.
Oxalic acid -It increases acidity, it is used to increase the taste.
Formaldehyde – It hardens the tissues, gives burning sensation to the respiratory and digestive system, it also destroy Kidneys. Not only this, also gives burning sensation to eyes nose and throat. This substance also harms the Nervous System. It may lead to cancer. It is used in the formation of sugar and also used as a preservative. It is also found in toothpaste and shampoo. Sodium Hydroxide (caustic soda) – It creates burning sensation in the digestive system and ulcer. It may lead to fibrotic growth. Extracts of it, are found in refined oils and vegetable ghee. Soft drinks- Different kinds of chemicals are found in soft drinks which are harmful to health. Soft drinks weaken teeth and bones, as they extract Calcium from the body. Human teeth which does not decay even if buried in soil for years, but gets dissolved in 20 days if put in soft drinks. Toilets can be cleaned with these soft drinks, it works like an acid. White bread- It has no fibre. It is the biggest harmful food but is in wide use. Lack of fiber in the bread results in constipation, diabetes, heart disease, cancer and digestive disorders. To make bread soft, tasty and to preserve it for a long time, chemicals are mixed which are harmful to health.
Chocolate– It contains lead which stops the growth of children, cavity starts in the teeth even at the age of 7-8 years.
