In current scenario a large percentage of adults are falling into increased levels of sleep deprivation, when they don’t take enough sleep said by many researchers of “The American Psychological Association”. Both adults and younger generations’ sleep is suffering from stress in their daily life. Innovative Approach

New US research has focused the affects of sleep deprivation on our work potential, it can decrease our ability to complete tasks, leading to mistakes at work that can vary from basic errors to costly and probably even unsafe mistakes.

Researchers at Michigan State University carried out the new research on sleep deprivation. In which they had looked at the effects of 24 hours of sleep deprivation on 234 participants.

For the study the participants were asked by researchers to come into the sleep lab at 10 pm and complete a series of tasks in order.

Many times the participants were self disturbed and had to remember where they were in their sequence of tasks before continuing where they had left off.

At midnight, 50% of the participants stayed awake in the lab overnight while the rest 50% slept at home. The findings showed that the next day there was a high increase in the number of errors made by those who had stayed awake all night and were sleep-deprived, compared to those who had slept at home. This study was published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology.

Co-author Kimberly Fenn said that sleep-deprived participants not only showed more errors than those who slept but also showed a progressive increase in errors linked with memory when they performed the task this effect was not observed in those who slept. This showed that the sleep-deprived group experienced a great deal of difficulty in reminding self where they were in the sequence during interruption.

The study suggests that those who are sleep-deprived at work will not be able to perform certain tasks at their work place most probably those associated with a lot of interruptions or costly or serious errors, or if they still continue doing then might perform these tasks only for a short period of time.

It was said by ‘Fenn’ that many mistakes took birth because of sleep deprivation, if we look at mistakes and accidents in surgery, public transportation and even operating nuclear power plants all cannot be excused. Lack of sleep is one of the primary reasons for human errors. Also many people are absorbed in important professions but due to sleep-deprivation are found to have fallen asleep in the working hours.

Fenn said that every day, approximately 11 sponges are left inside the patients who have undergone surgery. Almost 4,000 potentially terrible mistakes each year are made and a technical task gone terribly wrong, all these result from sleep deprivation

People will be heavily affected with their cognitive skills. Students if put their whole night in studying even then will not be able to perform well for their exams. Overcome Sleep Deprivation

There are numerous habits or practices that one can adapt to help release the sleep deprivation disorder that builds up inside us every day. But one can kick off this by practicing few things regularly:

Breathing Exercises

The breath is the body’s natural sleeping pill, but in order to enter into its powers, one got to learn how to use it. The benefits of regular meditation can’t be neglected. Studies have shown that, it actually causes changes in the brain that will make one more relaxed and better to handle the sleep deprivation in general. One doesn’t even have to be too strict about it; as little as 5-10 minutes a day with eyes closed and just focusing on the normal breathing or thinking about any of the favorite thing which is most liked, then this would be enough to create positive changes within self.

Physical Exercise

Exercising the body will give one the most effective ways to release intensified sleep deprivation and to induce the brain to generate “feel good” chemicals like serotonin and dopamine. Try a brisk daily walk at lunchtime or after dinner, will be very effective.
