India’s First & Largest Floating Solar Power Plant Installed by NTPC

Solar Power is the cleanest form of energy and works a renewable source without posing any fear of pollution at the same time being cost efficient especially for a country like India where Sun is shining throughout the year. A country like India can make a wise use by tapping the potential of solar power. This will reduce the consumption of polluting fossil fuels and thereby help in reducing the carbon emissions through other resources of energy. In this direction, NTPC has achieved a landmark by bringing the floating technology to Indian Energy market.

NTPC has received a feather in its cap by installing India’s largest floating solar panel in Kerala. The Solar panel has been inducted under the ‘Make in India’ initiative and is the one of its kind. The capacity of the floating solar panel is 100 KwP which has been installed in the Rajiv Gandhi Combined Cycle Power Plant in the Kayakulam district of Kerala. The system has been installed by the Swelect Energy Systems India Ltd. Of Chennai with the support of NETRA and NTPC Kayakulam in a short time span of about 22 days.

The new advancement in the field of Solar energy in India is an effort towards saving the land usage and increasing the efficiency of the whole system. Giving a fillip to the solar energy initiatives in India, the floating system has been indigenously developed by the NTPC Energy Technology Research Alliance, the Research and Development wing of NTPC in collaboration with Central Institute of Plastic, Engineering and Technology, Chennai. The floating systems have many advantages over the conventional land based systems as they are easier to be installed, secondly, they reduce the evaporation of water into atmosphere and further, they are more efficient as cooling is easy. NTPC has further elaborated that installations of such systems in India can be a breakthrough as there are many water bodies present around in the country.

Such a progressive step can help in solving the energy crisis in the country and would reduce the demand for fossil fuels, one’s the plant achieves success.
