Titled as ‘India’s first space film’, Mission Mangal release in Hongkong on 2nd January 2020. Though the movie went against its expectations of being a superhit on the Indian Box office and gained an IMDb rating of only 6.5, yet it is expected to make some good collection on foreign lands.
Sharing the post of Mission Mangal release in Hongkong, Akshay Kumar tweeted that he felt proud of the foreign release. He wrote
Narrating the story of ISRO’s Mars Orbiter Mission which was launched in 2013, the movie has Akshay Kumar, Vidya Balan, Taapsee Pannu, Sonakshi Sinha, Nithya Menen, Sharman Joshi, Kirti Kulhari and HG Dattatreya playing the role of leading group of scientists who made the mission successful and there is no doubt that these actors have their fans waiting in Hongkong waiting for them.
Mission Mangal release in Hongkong with Cantonese subtitles is expected to make a good collection as it holds a record of a lifetime collection of 202.98 crores on the Indian box office. Akshay Kumar also says that Mission Mangal was not an easy project to deal with as a space Genre was an untouched territory in Bollywood and as it is the first such film, it is expected to do good on Hongkong screens as well.
He said in a group interview “when we are making it, lots of people had even told us how much business it’ll do: ‘it’ll go till Rs 60-70 crore.’ Because this genre is not explored, nobody knows. It was a big risk. I had no idea where this film would go and how would people react to science. But it was a risk worth taking” As Mission Mangal release in Hongkong, the actor says that he was not expecting such a good response from this genre. He says “I’m glad this had worked and the new genre has opened up for the film industry.
Hollywood makes 14-15 films on science, but this is our first. Just last night, I was pitched a science fiction. Now several films will be made. Children are watching the film, dragging their parents who are then realizing that even they didn’t know what kind of things went into sending a satellite on Mars”
