Menstruation is one of the biological processes of a woman’s body which deserves one to be cautious and self-care. One should ensure proper hygiene during menses, and eating right is the key to ease the pain one goes through.

As this is one of the important issues of women and also because of shyness they never come forward to ask their queries, if they are in trouble. Looking to the problems faced by women, Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar made a movie on it, with the name Padman (2018), elaborating the in and out of this monthly phase of women.

Executive producer of the movie was Guneet Monga further strengthened the conversation around menstruation in India with her Oscar-winning documentary, Period, End of Sentence. Akshay Kumar’s Padman, which was based on the true story of a man named Arunachalam Muruganantham, also took active steps to spread awareness on menstrual hygiene.

India still has to go a long way as several thousand women still use rags, leaves and other unsanitary substances during their periods. These not only restrict them to stay at home, but also affect their health.

It is very important to keep the vaginal area clean especially during periods when there is blood flow from the body. One should use warm water and diluted soap to wash the area. One can also use recommended vaginal washes available in the market to keep self clean. If, however, they irritate one’s skin or vagina, discontinue the use and consult with a doctor. The vagina also has a self-cleaning mechanism, so these washes aren’t really necessary for most women.

It is advised not to use two pads together as two is not better than one. Very often some women who experience heavy flow, tend to use two sanitary pads at one go to control the flow and prevent staining of clothes. This, is never advised as it can cause infections in the vaginal region. Use one and keep changing it often if the flow is heavy.
