Lifestyle Evidence

In the current scenario Smartphone’s are just like our clothes. One always love to explore new latest Smartphone running in trend and change very frequently with the existing older phones (Lifestyle Evidence). If it is used in limits then the things are good but if it is misused then it is a headache. So it is tough to say it is a boon or bane. These phones have become part and parcel of our lifestyle.

They look so attractive and with small changes in the new phones we get pulled by it and become desperate to have. In a way we can say they can easily make us stupid. We cannot say that people were not working nor there was no developments back in the past when there were no Smartphone’s. Rather all the developments had taken place when there were no such mobiles. This means current generation has become the puppet of mobiles and along with it stupid also.

Let Us Have A Look To The Evidences

Lifestyle Evidence 1 Cognitive Development Capacity

Cognitive development are significantly reduced when the Smartphone is within quick look distance even if it’s turned off and faced down according to a recent study. This new report came from the University of Texas at Austin, “Brain Drain: the Mere Presence of One’s Own Smartphone Reduces Available Cognitive Capacity, this was published in the Journal of the Association for Consumer Research.

Researchers found that people were able to hold and process more data significantly when his or her Smartphone was in another room. When analyzing the attention control and cognitive processes it was found that participants who kept their phones in a pocket or bag did quality work than those who kept their phones on the desk when taking the same test. Also observed the data when the phone was turned off and faced down on the desk, but the simple sight of one’s own Smartphone seemed to induce “brain drain” by exhausting restricted cognitive resources.

Lifestyle Evidence 2 “Smartphone-Distancing Behaviors”

This new clinical research from the McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas at Austin also serves to strengthen the evidence that it’s nice to keep our smartphones out of sight whenever we are supposed to be present physically and mentally fully at that moment. For example: while driving or socializing face-to-face with friends and family.

Lifestyle Evidence 3 Focused Attention And Destructibility

A lack of focused attention and distractibility was experienced to constantly keep checking the Smartphone. One should prefer to keep the Smartphones against the reachability whenever possible. For example, if one is working with the concentration then keep Smartphone locked in the Almirah to complete the work without any errors.

Adrian Ward and co-authors from McCombs conducted two different experiments with nearly 800 Smartphone users. Their main emphasis was to study the reduction of cognitive capacity caused by the mere sight of one’s own Smartphone.  Before the test began, all participants were instructed to put their phones in “silent” airplane mode. Then, participants were asked randomly to place their Smartphones either on the desk facing down, in their pocket or personal bag, or in another room. As mentioned earlier, the researchers found that participants who left their phones in another room significantly outperformed those with their phones anywhere physically close to them while taking the test.

One of the most valuable takeaways from this study is that it never depends  whether smartphone is turned on or off—or whether it’s face up or face down on a desk close to one…Just having the smartphone within sight can reduce work proficiency on cognitive tasks which require undivided attention. Luckily for all of us, putting Smartphone in another room, a pocket, or the bottom of a bag seems to be an easy remedy for this problem.

Anyone who needs to optimize concentration and cognitive function, keeping Smartphones out of sight helps to boost brain power and minimize brain drain.
