People nowadays don’t realize the value of life. Even this duty has to be fulfilled by law and therefore, after Noida and Aligarh, Bengaluru Traffic Police has decided to implement a new rule ‘No Helmet, No Fuel’ from 5th August to crack all helmet fewer two-wheeler riders.

This initiative will prevent helmet fewer rides from getting fuel at petrol pumps to ensure road safety. P Harishekaran, Additional Commissioner of Police, said “We have taken this initiative to prevent accidents. Since fuel is an essential commodity, people will at least bring a helmet and wear it while refueling.”

Not wearing a helmet is a violation of the law according to Section 129 of the Motor Vehicles Act and the violator is liable for a six months imprisonment under Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

The idea was also picked up earlier by its neighboring states of Kerela and Andhra Pradesh. VK Jagadish, DCP Traffic East, said “We will hold a meeting with the owners of the petrol pumps on Saturday. We will start implementing the rule from Monday. There are no provisions of penalizing the petrol pump workers but we are seeking social cooperation for a good cause.”

According to the statistics by Bengaluru traffic police, the number of two-wheeler road accidents has increased from 140 to 150 from 2017-18. United Nations study says that wearing a helmet can increase the chances of survival by 49% and can prevent accident injuries by 69%.

The number of people charged for not wearing a helmet was 1.77 crore in 2015 in Bengaluru which increased to 1.88 and 2 crores in the consecutive years. President of the Bengaluru Petroleum Owners’ Association, Ravindra said “There have been a select few outlets that have been approached by the police as of now. This is good and will increase the safety of the riders. We don’t have a problem with this rule but in certain pockets of the city, there are rowdy elements, who might vandalize the store if we deny them service. So, we have to see what the police propose for this.”
