The winners of the 92nd Academy Awards have been declared, ending the 2019-20 awards season. It was seen that “Parasite” made history as the first South Korean movie to top the Oscar race and alongside had won several Academy Awards. The year’s most nominated film at the 2020 Oscars was “Joker”, followed closely by “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,.” The films “The Irishman and “1917” were with 10 nominations each. Though “Joker” was not declared the best film but yes, took home Oscars for Best Actor (Joaquin Phoenix) and Best Original Score. “The film Irishman” unfortunately did not get any award, while “Hollywood” bagged with two prizes (Best Supporting Actor and Best Production Design) and “1917” won TKT.
The film “Parasite” had broken all the records; previously, it was nominated in six categories and won in three categories with Oscars; for Best International Feature Film, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Director. The best director was a big surprise after Sam Mendes took home Best Director honours from the DGA and BAFTA Awards. Other multi-nomination contenders in 2020 included “Marriage Story,” “Jojo Rabbit,” “Little Women,” and “Ford v Ferrari.”
This season Academy Awards had faced several consequences for, this year’s batch of nominations for shutting out women in the Best Director category (Greta Gerwig’s “Little Women” broke into the Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay races but failed to secure a Best Director nomination) and the near shutout of people of colour in the acting races. Best Actress, Cynthia Erivo’s nomination for “Harriet”, made her the only acting nominee of colour at the 92nd Academy Awards.
