In June 2018, Pakistan was placed in the grey list by the international terror financing watchdog and gave an ultimatum and plan of action to avoid the black list. Since then Pakistan was quite worried and was trying to find the ways to come out of the blacklist.
Trusted sources have revealed that, Pakistan has taken a decision for Saeed, in which he will be put in prison for 11 years, by an Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Lahore on Wednesday (12.02.2020) on the eve of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) Plenary meeting. Hence, the effectiveness of this decision remains to be seen as the Pakistan has found Saeed to be a criminal. All the charges on him were found true. He was involved in Mumbai attack 26/11 and was the mastermind of the whole terrorist attack.
❒ Hafiz Saeed Terrorist Attacks
Government sources said on Thursday (13.02.2020) that now, it remains to be seen, if Pakistan would take action against all other terrorist entities and individuals operating from its land.
The media reports have said that a court in Pakistan has sentenced UN-designated and internationally proscribed terrorist Hafiz Saeed in terror financing cases. This decision was a part of a long-pending international obligation of Pakistan to put an end to support for terrorism.
As this was only of one of the cases but, it has to be seen whether Pakistan would take action against other all terrorist entities and individuals operating from territories under its control, and expose the person behind the cross border terrorist attacks, including in Mumbai and Pathankot to give quick justice.
Saeed’s conviction comes days ahead of the Plenary and Working Group meetings of the FATF – a Paris-based global watchdog which, last year, had warned Pakistan to deliver on its commitments to curb terror financing and money laundering.
The Jamaat-ud Dawa (JuD) chief and three of his associates – Hafiz Abdul Salam bin Mohammad, Mohammad Ashraf and Professor Zafar Iqbal – had been indicted by the ATC – on horror financing charges on December 11 last year in a case filed by the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD).
❒ Pakistan placed on the ‘Grey List’
Because of all these terror activities, Pakistan was placed on the ‘Grey List’ by the FATF in June, 2018 and was given a plan of action to complete it by October, 2019 otherwise be ready to face the risk of being placed on the blacklist along with Iran and North Korea.
Due to this warning, it is the first time Saeed has been imprisoned since the 2008 attacks. His lawyer Imran Gill said that he was found guilty of “being part of a banned terrorist outfit” and for “having illegal property”.
As per the report in the Dawn newspaper, he was also given a fine of Rs 15,000 in each of the two cases. The punishment of both the cases will run simultaneously.
