Raisina Dialogue Inauguration 2020 on Tuesday: PM Modi to Attend the Session

The Inauguration of Raisina Dialogue will begin on Tuesday (14.01.2020) and Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be attending the inaugural session in which seven former heads of state or government will share their views on important challenges being faced by the world. This is India’s flagship global conference on geopolitics and geo-economics.

This year’s Raisina Dialogue will be the fifth edition discussions, organized by the Ministry of External Affairs and the Observer Research Foundation in collaboration, will fetch together 700 international participants from over 100 countries, will be the largest gathering of its kind.

The participation of 12 foreign ministers, from Russia, Iran, Australia, Maldives, South Africa, Estonia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Hungary, Latvia, Uzbekistan, and the EU will be taking part in the three-day conference.

After the killing of Iranian Quds Force commander Qassem Soleimani, it is for the first time, Iran foreign minister Javed Zarif’s will be participating which carries a great significance. Zarif and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will both arrive here on Tuesday night (13.01.2020) and deliver their address for the dialogue the next day.

Important Dialogues by the Foreign Ministers

  • Zarif will also be interacting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and hold talks with Jaishankar during his visit.
  • The Chief of Staff of the Japan Self-Defence Forces, General Koji Yamazaki, Vice Chief of Australian Defence Force, Vice Admiral David Johnston and Chief of Naval Staff of UK, Admiral Tony Radakin will also converse at the conference.
  • The closing ceremony will be delivered by Vice President of the European Commission and High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, European Union, Josep Borrell.
  • Secretary-General of the Commonwealth and the Secretary-General of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation will also attend the conference.
  • The NSA of Afghanistan, Deputy NSA of the United States and several ministers of state, including from Germany, will also present their ideas at the conference.
  • Forty percent of the speakers at the Dialogue are women.
  • The representatives of over 30 think-tanks from around the world will also present their views across different sessions.
  • The former heads of government, New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark, former Afghan President Hamid Karzai, former Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt, former Danish Prime Minister Anders Rasmussen, former Bhutanese premier Tshering Tobgay and former South Korean Prime Minister Han Seung-soo, will also be engaged in the discussions.

Prime Minister Modi will be attending the inaugural session on Tuesday and also along with him seven former heads of state or government, with high international standing and rich experience in governance will be participating in the conference and will share their views during the inaugural session on important challenges faced by the world related to globalization, 2030 agenda, and role of technology in modern world, climate change, and counter-terrorism.

Over the course of two days, serious discussions will take place over 80 sessions around 5 thematic pillars –

  • Global development agenda and the state-individual relationship in the age of digital communities and cyberspace.
  • The nationalist impulses challenging global institutions and collective action.
  • Role of technologies in determining political.
  • Debate on global trading architecture.
  • Economic and military power.

The MEA said that the combined power and collaborations in the Raisina Dialogue will represent India’s deliberative philosophy as well as its international credibility and convening power.
