TomTom Traffic Index 2019
This index is covering 416 cities across 57 countries on 6 continents; this Traffic Index ranks urban congestion worldwide and provides free access to city-by-city information. One, along with drivers, city planners, automakers and policy makers, through this index data can tackle traffic-related challenges.
The latest data of traffic congestion revealed in 2019 (9th year), found that India has topped in the TomTom Traffic Index 2019 with 4 of its cities amongst the 10 most congested cities globally.
The data of traffic congestion reveals that Bengaluru is the most congested city in India: The data of 4 cities are as follows, Bengaluru (71%), Mumbai (65%), Pune (59%) and New Delhi (56%). The ranks are given as 1st to Bengaluru, 4th to Mumbai, 5th to Pune and 8th to New Delhi.
The other global cities on the grounds of traffic congestion coming into top 10 cities includes Manila from the Philippines, Bogota from Colombia, Moscow from Russia; Lima from Peru, Istanbul from Turkey, and Jakarta from Indonesia.
New Delhi has been given the rank of 8th position this year with 56% congestion level. On an average, Delhiites driving during peak hours spend an extra 190 hours, i.e., 7 days, 22 hours in traffic each year.
The city’s heaviest congestion (81%) was recorded on October 23, 2019, while its lowest congestion (6%) was recorded on March 21, 2019.
The TomTom Traffic Index 2019 indicated that the congestion level in Delhi has reduced by 2% when compared to TomTom Traffic Index 2018.
Bengaluru takes the top spot this year with city drivers expecting to spend an average of 71% extra travel time stuck in traffic.
On an average, people in Bengaluu driving during peak hours, spend an extra 243 hours, i.e., 10 days, 3 hours in traffic each year.
In Mumbai driving during peak hours spend an extra 209 hours, i.e., 8 days, 17 hours in traffic each year.
On an average, those in Pune driving during peak hours spend an extra 193 hours, i.e., 8 days, 1 hour in traffic each year.
Bengaluru has officially earned the unconvinced distinction of being the world’s most traffic congested city. Statistically, during this time these Bengaluru drivers could have watched 139 football games, or seen 215 episodes of Game of Thrones, or planted 244 trees. In the traffic congestion Fridays were found to be the worst, in the time period between 7 PM and 9 PM experiencing worst rush hour figures in Bengaluru.
The report said that a Bengaluru commuter travelling after 8 PM on Friday could save at least 5 hours per year (for a 30-minute commute). Ongoing construction work and infrastructure development have often been blamed to play a major part in Bengaluru’s abysmal traffic conditions.
