Wow! Now this is something to be really proud of!

The words which are very popularly used by the Indians have now been decided to be used on a wider platform i.e. the World, served by the most popularly referred dictionary- THE OXFORD DICTIONARY!

The words like ‘Dadagiri’, ‘Anna’, ‘Surya Namaskar’, ‘Bapu’, ‘Jugaad’ etc. will be seen in the Oxford dictionary from now as they have been already been added in it in the month of September 2017.

The 70 chosen words are pegged from Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali and Gujarati. The dictionary witnessed an addition of total of 1000 words in total in the September edition.

List of Indian words that found their esteemed place in the dictionary:

  • FOOD ITEMS: Bhindi, Gosht, Gulab jamun, Keema, Mirch, Mirch Masala, Namkeen and Vada.
  • UBIQUOTOUS WORDS: jugaad, funda, achcha, natak, timepass and chup.
  • HUMBLE WORDS: ji, mata and jai.
  • Also Dadagiri, chaudhuri and chamcha.
  • INDIAN-ENGLISH WORDS: chakka jam, mirch Masala and namkeen.
  • TELUGU WORDS: Anna (meaning elder brother), formerly Anna meant monetary unit of India and Pakistan.
  • URDU WORD: Abba (meaning father) was also added.
  • Surya Namaskar from the Indian yoga was also added.

The Oxford English Dictionary publishes four updates every year in the month of March, June, September and December. While choosing the words, its press considers the popularity of the words in all walks of life, be it from sports, entertainment, education, gossips or social media (like “selfie”).
