Ajay Devgan starrer Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior makes a collection of 60 crores at the end of its first weekend. The movie was released alongside Deepika Padukone starrer Chhapaak and it was a great dilemma before the release whether the two movies will have a neck to neck competition or not. However, the very first week of the release proved that Chhapaak stands nowhere around Tanhaji as the former managed to collect only 19 crores on the box office.
With the hike of 30%, Tanhaji jumped to a collection of 25-26 crore on Sunday whereas Chhapaak could only raise 7-7.5 crore.
Comparing the two movies became almost impossible as both of them moved opposite to their expectations. Where on one hand audience speculated the success of Ajay Devgan’s movie pertaining to his previous flick ‘Dede Pyaar De’ which was not a grand success, on the other hand, fans had a very high expectation from Chhapaak. However, both the movies went opposite.
Reports state that Tanhaji has scored good numbers in Mumbai Circuit and CP Berar. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted the collection of two movies saying
Film exhibitor Akshay Rathi states that the underwhelming response of the film is due to the reason that Deepika Padukone went to pay homage to the students of JNU after the attack. He said “If the trends on Twitter actually have an impact at the ground level, then a lot of people would watch Chhapaak because they agree with what Deepika did, and many may not watch it as they don’t agree with what she did. Deepika is an individual and has rights in a democracy. It’s not right to call for any kind of boycott as it is unfair in the studio which has invested its money in making the film. Although Deepika is a producer it’s the studio that has invested a bigger chunk of money and has not taken any stand. The boycott will not just affect Deepika but also the financers, distributors, the exhibitors, the vendors, and many others. It’s unfair to them.”
