Anti Citizenship Act protests in Assam

Notably, the protests which had broken out in several parts of Assam following the passage of Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019 in Parliament on November 11 and it became an Act thereupon after the Presidential assent on November 12.

For security purposes, 26 Army columns had been deployed in Assam to assist the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) in handling the situation.

But now, Assam Finance Minister and North-East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) chairman Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the curfew imposed in Assam will be completely withdrawn from Tuesday and broadband internet will also be restored. Sharma, in a tweet, also added that mobile internet in Assam, however, will remain suspended as a precaution due to major protests across the state over the amended Citizenship law.

Assam ADG Law and Order, GP Singh, said that “Situation in Guwahati have been improved significantly, the curfew is being completely withdrawn from 6 am today (December 17th) in the entire Guwahati city jurisdiction. He also thanked the people of Guwahati for making this possible and prayed for their wellness. The people support in Assam had helped the government in bringing back normalcy and this gave us the confidence to restore broadband Internet connection in the entire state of Assam from December 17th.

But still, some of the districts are under the jurisdiction of curfew. The Dibrugarh district administration informed that the curfew is being relaxed in the district from 6 am to 8 pm for today. The curfew in Shillong has also been relaxed from 6 am to 7 pm on Tuesday.

Himanta Biswa Sarma, earlier on Monday, said that curfew imposed in the wake of major protests across Assam will be relaxed only during day time while it will remain as scheduled at night until the situation is reviewed by the government.

But later in the evening while addressing a press conference, he said, In Guwahati, curfew has been withdrawn and now there will be no curfew in the day time. However, curfew in the night will remain imposed as such until we review the situation and make a decision accordingly.

Sarma also declared that around 136 cases of damage and other related crimes were registered since the protests exploded in the state, in connection to that police had arrested 190 persons with recent incidents that took place in Guwahati and in the entire state.

He suspected that a “specific pattern” was noticed during the Guwahati mob violence incident. There was a huge involvement of people who were not citizens of Guwahati and might have come from the lower Assam districts.

He said, yet it has to be identified by the government if the protestors had come for participation in campaigning or they were brought here by some suspicious activist, a proper investigation team will be monitoring the entire happenings.
