The proposal of metro and bus free ride was proposed by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on June 3, 2019, and said will be implemented within 2 to 3 months.

The expenses on the same will be taken care by the Delhi government, said by CM Arvind Kejriwal, which will come approximately 700-800 crore.

Though he said, he can implement this at his own powers, so very soon it will come into focus. But the interesting part was that DMRC (Delhi Metro Rail Corporation) and the Delhi Government both have 50% stakes in the public transport service.

Though Arvind Kejriwal 50% was with him the recommendation of another 50% was required, for which the centre did not approve.

So the proposal was turned down on 26th June 2019 by the centre.

Reasons for non-acceptance

  • This would lead to heavy congestion in Metro as the travelling would increase by one lakh, Already 25 lakhs people are travelling by Metro daily and there is huge congestion within this only.
  • Mr Hardeep Singh Puri, Union Minister said Arvind Kejriwal-leading AAP party has no plan. He is a distracter, instead of focusing on Delhi’s problem to overcome; he is focusing on Delhi’s assembly elections.
  • Mr Puri, further said before announcing this, he would have checked the no. of buses and its frequency, as with this proposal no. of buses have also to be increased. So Arvind Kejriwal theories are under two types of Syndrome ‘broken window economics’ and ‘broken window fraud.’
  • People on social media ridiculed the proposal of CM Arvind Kejriwal and said this is against women empowerment. We want the women to be strong and capable, such that they can bear their own expenses.
  • ‘Metro Man’ E Sreedharan and women activist had a strong vision that women are the most active creature and always lead a front foot life and do not mind paying for their own tickets.

However, in the latest update, claiming there’s no reason why a ‘free ride’ scheme should be implemented, the Central government rejected AAP’s proposal on 26th June 2019 put up by CM Arvind Kejriwal to offer the same to women in the Delhi metro, says a report from Times Now News.
