The recent news of an online game promoting teenagers to self harm and suicide by throwing upon them certain dares and challenges is shocking. Many teenagers are playing with their lives in lieu of some fun ending up harming themselves. Though there are no material evidences of existence of such games but the recent phenomenon of The Blue Whale game has brought forward a big question over the extent of internet and its disadvantages.
The kids in their tender age are being misguided. To look into the matter we must have a look at what the Blue Whale Challenge is about:-It is believed to be a suicide game wherein a group of administrators or a certain curator gives a participant a task to complete daily — for a period of 50 days — the final of which is the participant committing suicide. Participants are expected to share photos of the challenges/tasks completed by them.
These daily tasks start off with some easy stuff such as listening to certain genres of music, waking up at odd hours, watching a horror movie, among others, and then slowly escalate to carving out shapes on one’s skin and further harm to oneself.
There is still uncertainty over how a participant plays the game. While some say the user has to install some app on their smart phone, others say it’s via social media platforms such as Instagram and Facebook where the administrators get in touch with the participant after those interested throw out postings on social media asking for a “curator”. A number of different hashtags— #bluewhalechallenge, #curatorfindme, #i_am_whale — act as signals for the anonymous curators.
Now when we already are aware of several suicide instances due to this game, it’s our responsibility to get our kids away from this. Police in several countries are now issuing warnings over the dangers of the game as it has also been reportedly linked to many teen deaths in some countries.
The most important activity as a parent, you need to do is to keep a track of your kid’s activities throughout the day. There is a need of special monitoring when they are exposed to social media and web. parents out there or anyone that knows of any kids playing an online game called ‘Blue Whale’, please get your kids off this game. Kids must me encouraged and educated to value their lives. They should be made aware that their life is their own and is not functioning of anyone’s commands. There should be a limit set for the fun activities. It is tough to make them understand at this tender age but to let them follow the right path , they must be guided properly.
