Tihar seeks hangman from Meerut for Nirbhaya killers.

The state’s prison authorities said on Wednesday that amidst the assumptions with respect to the hanging of four convicts in the Nirbhaya gang-rape case, the authorities of Delhi’s Tihar jail have asked the services of two hangmen from Uttar Pradesh.

After a few hours of the shifting of Pawan Gupta, one of the convicts in the 2012 gang rape case to Tihar Jail from Mandoli jail late on Sunday night, the UP Prison authorities received this request. Three other convicts of this case – Akshay Thakur, Mukesh Singh, and Vinay Sharma – are already in Tihar Jail.

Anand Kumar, Director General (DG) of UP Prisons Administration and Reform Services, confirmed on Wednesday that the Tihar jail superintendent had written a letter to the UP prison authorities seeking services of UP’s hangmen as they do not have hangman there, though the name of the convict was not mentioned in the letter.

The letter signified that some convicts in Tihar jail were awarded capital punishment and their legal and constitutional remedies had been exhausted. The four men have been on death row for two years.

Kumar accepted the plea and said the hangmen would be provided to the Tihar jail authorities as and when required.

Prison officials revealed that the UP prison administration has two hangmen on its rolls, one in Lucknow and another in Meerut. He said though the date and timings were not mentioned by the Tihar jail authorities still the two hangmen have been told to remain prepared in case they were called for the execution of convicts anytime soon.

Let us recall the incident about the convicts which we are talking about. On December 16, 2012, six people were convicted of brutally raping a 23-year-old paramedical student in a moving bus while she was on her way back home. She later died of her injuries but this brutal gang rape sparkled nationwide, made people furious which led to new legislation to deal with such heinous crimes.

Out of the six people convicted in the case, one was a minor, was sent to a rehabilitation center and another, Ram Singh, committed suicide in Tihar Jail and 4 are in Tihar Jail (the largest prison in Asia) who will very soon be hanged as per our Law.

According to reports, officers in Tihar, special ropes for the execution are being brought from jail in Bihar’s Buxar, which had also sent ropes for the hanging of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru in 2013. The authorities had also written to other states for services of hangmen and had also begun inspections of the courtyard as well as the equipment used to carry out the execution.

Tihar Jail officials have also ordered 10 new ropes from the Buxar jail. The preparations are being made so that when the time comes, everything is in place. The ropes have to be of a particular type and should not break during the hanging or cut the throat, though old ropes are there but never wanted to take a probability,” said a Tihar officer while speaking to Hindustan Times.
