The World Health Organization (WHO) on Thursday (30.01.2020) has declared the spread of Coronavirus outbreak which had originated in Wuhan, China a global health emergency during a conference, as the outbreak continues to spread outside China.

This was announced shortly after the report of first human-to-human transmission of the virus in the U.S. that was confirmed by the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, according to ABC News.

WHO has only declared a global health emergency, a designation reserved for “extraordinary events” specifying an international risk to public health. “The motive behind for this declaration is not what is happening in China but what is happening in other countries said by WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. The main agenda is to avoid spreading in other countries

Earlier also it was done in five other cases, including the Ebola and Zika virus outbreaks of recent years. 

According to a live map of the outbreak created by the Johns Hopkins Center for Systems Science and Engineering with data from WHO and the CDC, 8,235 cases of the virus have been identified as of 11 a.m. EST on Jan. 30. Most of those cases are from mainland China, and five are from the United States. A total of 171 people have died from the virus, all in China. 

 As per the latest updates on coronavirus effects, 213 people have died due to the virus in China.

It was said by WHO that there had been 98 cases in 18 other countries, but no deaths. Most of the cases have emerged in people who had travelled from the Chinese city of Wuhan, where initially it had started.

Dangerous situation arose when there had been eight cases of human-to-human infection – in Germany, Japan, Vietnam and the United States.

Dr Tedros while speaking in a news conference in Geneva, described the virus as an “unprecedented outbreak” that has been met with an “unprecedented response”.

On complete analysis the data comes to as follows:

  • The first 425 cases confirmed in Wuhan
  • The average age of those infected was found to be 59 years old
  • Approximately 89% people were not hospitalised until the five days of illness
  • On an average 56% of the cases were of men
  • The percent cases diagnosed before 1 January linked to seafood market were 55%

WHO has praised the “extraordinary measures” taken by Chinese authorities in preventing it from spreading and said there was no reason to limit trade or travel to China. It was also added that this declaration is not a vote of any confidence in China”.

But still out of precautionary measures various countries have taken steps to close borders or cancel flights in recent days, and companies like Google, Ikea, Starbucks and Tesla have closed their shops or stopped operations.
