A quick guide to mcleodganj
Known as ‘little Lhasa’ because of its large Tibetian population, Mcleod ganj is situated 3 km from Dharamshala, in Kangra District of Himachal Pradesh.
Amid the towering mountains and divine weather lie many beautiful places to lay eyes on. Famous for being the residence of holy 14th Dalai Lama, Tsug la Khang (Dalai lama’s temple) is the life-blood of the town! The temple remains busy all day and is being attended by lamas, monks, nuns and lay people on regular basis. Just behind Tsug la Khang, a small Tibet museum resides, telling stories of Tibet and its people. Another well-known temple which is located at a distance of 50 km from Mcleod ganj is called Masroor Temple, which is believed to have been built by the Pandava brothers from Mahabharata. The temple is full of shrines of Lord Rama, Laxmana and Sita.
If you visiting the village of Mcleod ganj for some lone time in the lap of nature, then places like Dal lake is ideal for visit. Dal is a small lake surrounded by beautiful deodar trees. It is situated near a village called ‘tota rani’. Another fun spot you’ll love is Bhagsu Waterfall, which is a 30-foot cascade (during monsoons).
Behind the foot of Dharamshala range, a popular 9 kilometer trek called ‘Triund’ is the thing to look forward to. The place has the perfect view of dhauladhar mountains on one side and kangra valley on the other. Triund attracts a lot of tourist all over the world.
Talking about food and drinks the place offers, famous restaurants like Moonpeak, Nick’s Italian kitchen, Indique, Lung Ta and Jimmy’s Italian kitchen offers great tibetan food cuisine. Tibetan Thupka is the dish one must give a try to, especially during snowfalls.
Mcleod ganj is often called ‘the place where India meets Tibet’. The place has so much to indulge at and be fascinated about, whether taking up a course in buddhism, meditation, trek in the dhauladhar mountains, shopping local Tibetan crafts and jewellery or just hang out freely in the mountains!
