Asus ROG Phone 2 is the most powerful and feature-rich phone on the market right now. It’s got a Snapdragon 855, 120 Hz AMOLED display, 12GB RAM, and 512GB storage. There is a lot of amazing hardware on this phone as you would expect from a gaming phone. Gaming phones traditionally are not a great purchase. Most people don’t purchase gaming phones because they don’t provide good value even if you are looking for something that’s really high performance.
This phone is different as it is already appealing to people that aren’t even interested in games at all. If you just want a high-performance phone that just accomplishes tasks in a buttery smooth manner, it’s the ASUS ROG Phone 2. If you look at the specs, obviously the phone will perform well. Snapdragon 855, CPU, and the GPU are all overclocked. If you run benchmarks on this phone, it emerges as the clear leader among devices such as Samsung S10 and OnePlus 7 Pro.

Asus ROG Phone 2 makes use of 120 hertz AMOLED display. OnePlus 7 Pro has a 90-hertz display and just by swiping across the screen of the ROG Phone 2, you will be able to understand how good the screen is. Inarguably, ROG Phone 2 has the smoothest possible screen on any device right now. ROG Phone 2 is a gaming phone and hence there is more support from game developers that actually make use of the higher refresh screen.
Since the phone is built around gaming, it has air triggers on the top. These are not actually physical buttons that depress. The air triggers have capacitive sensors so when you press that area, it can trigger a software button in the game and allows you to get extra functionality within games. Asus has improved on the latency and the sensitivity of it and therefore it feels a little better compared to the last year’s version.
The speakers on the phone are loud, clear, and well-positioned in the front. When you compare the speakers with OnePlus 7 Pro, you will find that the Asus ROG Phone 2 has way better speakers. There is RGB lighting on the back. Honestly, this is little gimmicky but gives a gaming look and feel to the phone. The lighting can be changed or turned off completely if you don’t like it. Last year, the ROG Phone had the fingerprint scanner on the back whereas this time around, Asus has gone with the in-display fingerprint scanner.
There is a dual-camera setup on the back and the secondary camera is a wide-angle lens which is far more useful than a telephoto lens. This is a gaming phone and hence the camera is clearly not the focus. However, the camera performance is satisfactory and at par with some of the flagships out there. This year Asus did a couple of things with the ROG Phone that make it appealing to more people. The copper accents on the phone this year are a bit muted as compared to last year. The vent on the back is also functional this time around. Last year, the vent was more of a design aspect but this year, it is actually functional.
The software on ROG Phone 2 is perhaps the biggest upgrade from last year. Asus has finally decided to support stock Android right out of the box. When you boot the device, you can choose between stock Android or there over the top ROG theme. This kind of choice makes the phone usable and appealing to a lot of people. The phone has some serious hardware and the battery needs to be big to support them. ROG Phone 2 is rocking a 6,000 mAH battery and is more than sufficient to power the device throughout the day.
The phone is already available for pre-orders in China for around CNY 8,000 (INR 80,000). The price in India is anticipated to be a bit higher than this. All in all, this is a great and much-improved phone from last year.
