Causes of Burnout

The livelihood of a person is directly related to the money and money coincides with the kind of work done by one. So, we can say Jobs is one of the basic needs of survival and livelihood. A person stands healthy when there is strong coordination between physical and mental stability.

Outstanding performances and novel thinking can be expected from a healthy employee but these outcomes cannot be seen if the employee is not in his/her fitness state. The healthy atmosphere at the workplace is very essential and generates energy in the employees.

Many studies have been done, out of which one of the studies is compiled by Maslach and colleagues (2001) on the three dimensions of burnout, its causes, and prevention.

One can easily know the burned-out condition of an employee by these three critical conditions

  • Exhaustion points out the depletion of disturbing resources to cope with the current work environment. This is the stressed out, weighed down an employee.
  • Cynicism is an attitude towards the job. This is an unhappy employee.
  • Inefficacy is a reduction in personal accomplishment. This is the stressed-out employee who has developed a cynical attitude and has given up trying.

Work-Related Factors

Burnout factor 1 Job Demands – Devastating job demands. It is obvious that the team member will be with a stack of papers on their desk, a list that spans two pages on which work to be done will be mentioned, which gives a panicked look on their face.

Burnout factor 2 Divergence –Job demands get conflicted. This is often done in the team under the table while at a meeting with VCs.

Burnout factor 3 Uncertainty – Adequate information is not provided to do the job well. One is not provided time to re-think the uncertainty and could be given any of the job postings.

Burnout factor 4 Lack of Appropriate Resources – Improper training and/or inadequate resources to execute the job effectively. This is the main region of work disturbance

Burnout factor 5 Lack of Social Support – Lack of social support from supervisors has developed a major effect on burnout than a lack of social support from co-workers. The organization always ignores and excludes the employees if they want them to quit.

Burnout factor 6 Lack of Feedback – Related to all three dimensions of burnout. One is always given feedback to do hard work; if one doesn’t give it, then one never gets exactly what they want.

Burnout factor 7 Little Participation in Decision Making – The employees are very less involved in decision-making processes, and one gets the increase in rates of burnout.

Burnout factor 8 Personality Factors-Low Levels of control over events and openness to change are associated with higher burnout scores. At this stage, the co-worker thinks everything is out of his hands.

Higher burnout is faced by the individuals who have an external media of control (like-attributing events and achievements to external events, other people, etc).

Burned-out individuals cope with stressful events in a passive, defensive way. This is the stressed-out employee who has given up.

Burnout factor 9 Lack of Appropriate Awards – A major aspect of burnout:

  • Insufficient financial rewards – One is not receiving salary or benefits commensurate with achievements.
  • Lack of social rewards – The hard work of the employee is ignored and not appreciated by others.
  • Lack of intrinsic rewards – Not provided with some important task and never appreciated for doing it well.

It is obvious the hard-working, underappreciated employee quits after receiving a reply from the authorities that salary will not be raised due to insufficient budget.

Burnout factor 10 Unfairness – Unequal workload or pay, cheating, and/or evaluations or promotions are handled inappropriately. Because of this, the frustration results in the workplace when the super-friendly but under-qualified staff member is promoted by the boss.

Burnout factor 11 Conflict between values – If one denies doing something unethical or not in accordance with their own values. The employee is harassed then burnout in an individual is obvious.

Finally, burnout is influenced by social, organizational, personality factors, or by the interaction amongst all the three. The relationship of the individual with their work can be disrupted by anyone, or a combination of, these factors any of the things will result in burnout.
