A recently released video sharing app named Byte has gained more number of downloads on Apple’s iphone in US. The trending tech news suggests that the app has achieved the top position in list of most downloaded apps.
Dom Hofmann, co-founder of similar app Vine, launched Byte in January 2020. Previously, the parent company released Vine in 2012 and sold it to Twitter. However, the app was unsuccessful in proving itself useful and failed to attract people.Thus it was discontinued in 2016. Many users claimed that modifying the six second time limit of Vine needs a very creative approach.
But the notion was changed as Randy Nelson of research firm Sensor Tower said that the app “ended Friday as the No. 1 free iPhone app on the US App Store and is still in the top spot,”. The creators of the app wrote to apple that the users will find it “both familiar and new”.
The letter read “dear friends,
today we’re bringing back 6-second looping videos and a new community for people who love them.
it’s called byte and it’s both familiar and new. we hope it’ll resonate with people who feel something’s been missing.
Apart from US, Byte is top free app in Canada. It also ranks among the top 10 ranks in UK, Australia, Norway and New Zealand. In USA, Byte ranks sixth among the free apps.
The launch of this video sharing app has posed a threat to tiktok. While ByteDance is looking for a new CEO for Tiktok, which is under critical observation from US, the tiktok popularity has caused several problems. A letter by Tom Cotton and Senators Chuck Schumer suggest that the popularity of the video sharing app has prosed “national security risks”.
Unlike the highest-valued startupByteDance, Byte started with a small platform and it is clear from the quick response towards byte that the community remained loyal to Vine’s six second format
