DELHI METRO RECORDS HIGHEST EVER RIDERSHIP IN ONE DAY! OVER 59 LAKH JOURNEYS UNDERTAKEN

Delhi metro has made commute within Delhi and the NCR a lot cheaper and convenient. New corridors have started which extend connectivity to Delhi’s corners. Delhi metro has been around for nearly 2 decades now but the greatest ridership was noted on 29^th July 2019.

New corridors have taken off some burden on the existing lines by connecting far-flung areas of Delhi. The DMRC is continually making efforts to make metro ride a more enjoyable one. DMRC recorded a whopping 59 lakh journeys in one day on 29^th July 2019. DMRC shared the monthly ridership details on its social media pages. To be exact, 59,05,431 journeys took place on this day which the by far the highest in the history of the Delhi Metro.

Union Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs congratulated DMRC with this sweet tweet – “False narratives invariably collapse. Contrary to falsehoods spun by political novices about metro ridership, metro numbers continue to rise. 51,61,980 journeys performed yesterday. Facts speak for themselves.@OfficialDMRC”

Earlier, the ridership was based solely on the entry and exit of a passenger. This did not reflect the length of the journey and the corridors utilized. DMRC uses a new method for line utilization which takes into consideration the number of corridors used by a passenger. For instance, if a passenger travels from Majlis Park to Nehru place, through Azadpur, Netaji Subhash Place, Rajouri Garden, and Lajpat Nagar interchanges, the line utilization is of four lines.

The average distance travelled by a passenger on the metro has also increased over the years. Average distance travelled by a passenger in May 2017 was 16.50 kilometers, in May 2018, this number rose to 17.04 kilometers, and in May 2019, it reached 17.99 kilometers.

Before this, the highest ridership was recorded on 27^th May 2019 (55,07,238). The pink and magenta lines are partially functional. Once they become fully operational, this number is likely to increase. Currently, there are 7 metro lines. Delhi Metro is one of the fastest-growing metro lines ever in the world.
