Why is gold bought on Akshay Tritiya?

Indians and gold have been allied aeons ago. Any auspicious day in India is always followed by the purchasing of some gold. India has one of the largest gold consumers, standing at the 10th position in the largest gold possession in the world.

Akshay Tritaya is a Sanskrit word, where Akshay stands for “eternal” or “never diminishing”. This day is considered as one of the auspicious days in the Hindus and Jains. It has also  been coined by the term Akti in Chattisgarh and Akha Teej in Gujarat and Rajasthan. This day is believed to be one of the luckiest days  in Hinduism due to the planetary positioning of the sun and the moon. On the other hand, Jainism devotees from Ayodhya, on this day are known to have purchased gold and jewelry to offer to Jain Tirthankara Rishabhdev – who was the king in Ayodhya centuries ago.

As per ancient Hindu writ, this day marked the beginning of “Sat-Yug”. It was considered the golden age, which dents the very first one among all the four yugs.

It is presumed that the God of the Wealth and the treasurer of all the divine beings, “Kubera”, acquired his fortune and position by praying to the holy Lord Shiva at Shivapuram on Akshay Tritiya. This day marks its prosperity to initiate any new endeavours, purchase gold or some property. Purchasing gold on this propitious day is remarkably sweared to hail perpetual fortune.

Akshay Tritiya is recognized to be the day of the outset of “Treta Yuga”  and as per the Hindu mythology. This is that promising day that witnessed the incarnation of Lord Vishnu to Lord Rama, Parashurama, Vamana, the sixth manifestation of Lord Vishnu. There are various other notable incidents that pitched on this very day like:

Ved Vyas began the recitation of one of the greatest legends in the Indian history, Mahabharata.The holy ganges is believed to have weeped onto the Earth from the heaven on this day. It was only on this day that Lord Krishna’s  bestmate Sudhama, visited Krishna in Dwarka and offered him Poha. On this day, Vaishnavas are known to fast for the entire day and break it with rice.

On this day, Lord Krishna handed Draupadi a patra in which  the food appeared in  profusion, during their expulsion period.

One miraculous incident on this day made the Pandavas discover weapons inside the Earth which marked their victory against the Kauravas. They were also believed to receive Akshay Patra from the Sun God.

Goddess Annaapurna arose on the day of Akshay Patra.

Apart from purchasing Gold, this day also marks as one of the most favourable days for the couples to tie a knot as this day  dents the marriage of  Goddess Madhura and God Sundaresa (an incarnation of Lord Shiva), according to the South Indian legend.
