China is supposedly working on an artificial sun to create an alternative source of power on earth and will be saving electric power.

One of the Physicists is working on an earth-based sun simulator which basically is a fusion reactor in China’s Hefei Institutes of Physical Sciences.

The most astonishing part is that the scientists working there have claimed to have produced temperatures of 100 million degrees Celsius in the simulator, which is much more than 15 million degrees Celsius temperature of Sun’s core.

❍ Fusion Reactor

Scientists are assuming that at 100 million degrees Celsius temperature would be able to start a fusion reaction. But the challenge to scientists is that they need to hold that much of high temperature for an unlimited period of time to make it a practical source of energy.

Earlier, it was reported that the country is planning to create a fake moon by 2020 to substitute street lamps and lower electricity costs in urban areas.

Officials said that China is planning to complete the construction of the artificial sun this year, accomplishing an ion temperature of 100 million degrees Celsius.

The device used for this is HL-2M Tokamak designed to replicate the nuclear fusion process that occurs naturally in the sun and stars to provide almost infinite clean energy through controlled nuclear fusion, which is often named as the “artificial sun.”

But to achieve an ion temperature above 100 million degrees Celsius is one of the three challenges to reach the goal of harnessing nuclear fusion:

  • First challenge is the core of the sun is widely believed to be 15 million degree Celsius, meaning that the ion at the device’s core will be seven times higher than that of the Sun, Duan Xuru, said by an official of the China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) which was quoted in the state-run Global Times.
  • The second challenge is containing the fusion within a limited space for the long term running.
  • The third challenge is providing a sufficiently high-density contour.

All the three challenges have been reported in Science and Technology Daily on Monday (02.11.2019).

❍ The chemistry behind the Artificial Sun

The China’s active Tokamak device has achieved an electron temperature of over 100 million degrees Celsius in its core plasma, and an ion temperature of 50 million degrees Celsius, and it is the ion that generates energy in the device said by Duan.

To fetch up the ion temperature to over 100 million degree Celsius, they need higher device parameters & inject which can absorb more energy and operates with a more advanced working mode.

The new HL-2M device is equipped with all these capabilities and most probably will raise the current device’s plasma electric current level which shall greatly boost the plasma’s limitation providing main technical support for International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) for the experiment and its operation, reported in Science and Technology Daily.

The ITER is a global collaboration of 35 countries, including China, Russia and the US for undergoing large international scientific projects.
